-Atlanta Leads in Population Increase. Newly-released 2006 census figures reveal metro Atlanta, now passing the five-million mark, remains the country’s leader in population gains. Over the last six years, metro Atlanta added an average of more than 142,000 annually – much of this growth accounts for the in-migration of young, college educated workers to the area.
